Tips and Guides on Writing UC PIQ Prompt #3

UC Prompt #3: What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

Talk about your WOW factor, don’t make the mistake of simply listing the skills or talents you’ve developed. The real trick to writing a great response to this prompt is by tying character and personality traits to the activity. What makes you proud? Think about the stories that your friends and family like to share about you. Think about moments when your hard work paid off. What were your challenges? What has this experience taught you? This narrative should have a clear timeline that traces your growth from the past to the present and into the future. How do you plan to further develop your talent in college and/or after college? Show not only that you have grown, but that you will continue to grow as you take your first steps into adulthood. Keep in mind that don’t talk about how your talent is being hardworking. It is cliche and also your GPA has already reflected how you are hardworking or not.

Moreover, you can also talk about a character trait. Describing your specific traits (e.g. tenacity, humility, grit, and compassion) that helped you hone your talents is just as important as the skills or talents themselves. Elaborate on why this activity is worth it to you, and how your character is exhibited through this activity.

Make sure that somewhere in your narrative (preferably closer to the beginning) you let the reader know what makes your achievement an achievement. Next, figure out how your ability can best be shown through one event when you displayed it. Then, find a conflict or a transition to show how you matured from your story.
